How to optimize your website for voice search

One of the digital marketing trends for 2021 is voice search. More and more people are using voice search to make their next purchase or find a service. GlobalWebIndex reports that more than a quarter of global Internet users are using the voice search feature on their phones.

If your business’s website is not optimized for voice search, you could be losing potential leads. The Miami SEO experts at Ocean Front Media Group want to share some tips on how to optimize your site for voice search.

What is voice search?

Voice search is the function to search online using speech recognition. How this works is a user will ask a mobile device a question or command. The device will follow the command or bring up the question. For example, users can say “Siri, find me the nearest coffee shop,” or “Alexa, find me the best Miami SEO experts.”

Why is voice search important?

Ignoring voice search is a common SEO mistake made by companies. Not optimizing your site for this kind of search will make it harder for customers to find you online - especially those using home speakers. How does it impact your website’s searchability?

Searching through voice is a lot different than searching online. When you search through voice you typically search by asking a question. On the other hand, searching online uses short and less natural language. For example, searching online using voice search would be “Who are the Miami SEO experts?” Typing out the search online would be “Miami SEO experts.”

How to optimize your website for voice search

Use conversational keywords

The way you search changes when using voice search. When doing keyword research for your company, be sure to include conversational keywords instead of just short-tail keywords. This will help search engines bring up your site when users ask specific questions. Look for keywords that include the five W’s and How:

  • Who

  • What

  • Where

  • When

  • Why

  • How

Improve websites loading speed

Your website’s loading speed also plays a critical role in voice search. Having a slow site will cause users to exit your site and increase bounce rates. High bounce rates affect your ranking on search engines. Google reports that if a web page takes more than five seconds to load, then it is 90 percent more likely to suffer from bounce rates.

Take advantage of Google My Business

When using voice search for local businesses, users are using location or near me keywords. Google then turns to the Google My Business listing to recommend close companies. Google My Business is a free tool that tells Google where your business is located. To optimize your site for voice search, make sure your business has a Google My Business account.

Hire an SEO professional

A lot goes into making a website SEO friendly. It is not all about adding keywords to your site and calling it good. You need to keep your site updated, create new content, keep it at top speed and ensure the design is responsive. Doing it yourself takes a lot of time and could put your website at risk if it is not done correctly. An SEO expert can take care of all this to ensure it is completed correctly no matter and updated for Google’s algorithm changes.
